Signs and Symptoms of Substance Use

The following list includes common signs and symptoms of adolescent substance use.  One or two items might not indicate substance use but clusters of items should warrant concern.

 

Physical:

 

Glassy, bloodshot eyes,  Dilated pupils,  Smokey smell,  Runny nose/sniffles,  Red, raw nose,  Extreme excitability,  Sleepiness,  "nodding out",  Lack of coordination,  Change in appearance such as hair, clothes,  Marks on arms, legs, Frequent flu-like symptoms

 

Psychological/Emotional:  

Depression,  Anxiety,  Agitation,  Withdrawn,  Defensive,  Paranoid,  Delusional

 

Social/Developmental:  

Change in friends,  Secretive,  Peer conflict,  Odd phone calls,  Skipping school,  Drop in school performance,  Loss of interest in sports and hobbies, Spending unusual amounts of time in room

 

"Artifacts":  

Cigarettes,  Lighters and matches,  Cellophane,  Cigars,  Tin foil,  Visine or eye drops,  Chewing gum,  "Zip-loc" baggies,  "Sandwich" baggies,  Measuring scales,  Unexplained money,  Powders,  Pills,  Razor blades,  Burned spoons,  Incense, Missing prescription pills, Cold and cough medicines
